Recycling
Recycling is a simple concept. Take something that is not wanted and instead of throwing it away, turn it into something that is of use to someone. By diverting more than half of their waste from landfill, The City Bin Co. household customers are helping the environment. Recycling minimises the number of trees that need to be cut and reduces the amount of oil needed for manufacturing new products. We calculate the number of trees and litres of oil saved based on the tonnes of recycling material collected from our domestic customers.
Above percentages sourced from the EPA
Products made from recycled material are far more efficient to manufacture.
- Recycling one tonne of paper saves 18 mature trees.
- Manufacturing recycled paper requires 2650 less liters of water per tonne than manufacturing non-recycled paper.
- Paper can be recycled into many new products such as tar paper, asphalt shingles, cereal boxes, and of course, new paper.
- PET bottles (soda, water) and HDPE bottles (milk, laundry detergent) are by far the most commonly collected plastic materials.
- The lifespan of an aluminium can is about six weeks. That means it takes only six weeks for a drinks can to be manufactured, filled, sold, used, recycled and remanufactured.
- To make a recycled aluminium tin requires 95% less energy (e.g. burning oil) than manufacturing a new one.
- Steel is one of the world's most recycled products. In fact, steel is 100% recyclable, which means its lifecycle is potentially continuous.
- Recycled steel products can be made with 75% less energy than manufacturing new steel.
- Recovered plastic bottles can become drainage pipes, toys, carpet, filler for pillows and sleeping bags, clothes and cassette casings.
